Bruce McPhee BBQ
Sunday 7th June 2009
Well...what a day!!!
Today would have to be one of the best days I have ever experienced with The GT Club. I'm sure most would agree that our visit to Bruce McPhee's today was a real highlight for the muscle car enthusiast.
The day started a little cloudy with patchy rain, nevertheless we soldiered on to the meeting point where there were some 30 odd muscle cars with members & families in attendance for what would promise to be a memorable day.
After waiting some time, our esteemed Pres R.M was nowhere to be seen. Whilst we were a little concerned, we imagined it would be something mechanical as Rob had a treat in store for us and the McPhee's! He was trucking the Gibson Bathurst 9D race car to the BBQ today.
After waiting some more time, we decided to round up and make our way to Wyong to the McPhee's. At this point I have to thank Tony M who sacrificed the cruise to back track and assist Rob, also the two Nicks who led the cruise towards the McPhee's ensuring we kept in file and made good time.
I must say, seeing some 40 odd muscle cars (all steel bumpers) glistening on the way down the freeway and thru the country side to Bruce's place was a real highlight.
Once we entered the McPhee property, Toby kindly set himself up with video camera in hand to record all the vehicles entering over the bridge in to the property. Also there awaiting us was the McPhee family all standing there proudly welcoming a record number of vehicles to visit a Bathurst legend, filming us also as we made our way in.
Once parked and settled I looked around and saw what one can only describe as the ULTIMATE Muscle car display - GT's, Monaros, HO's you name it was a smorgasbord of delectable cars!
At this point we confirmed Rob was on his way (apparently Rob had to pillage some parts off the race car to get the F350 going lol ), and once our minds were at ease that Rob was on his way, we went about setting up BBQ's and marquee as the girls put on an awesome morning tea for the members and guests.
Rob made his way in, and we set-up the race car next to a gorgeous Warwick yellow HK GTS Monaro and Nicks silverfox XW GT. The pic opportunities then followed as people got to meet the GREAT Bruce McPhee, who seemed to have a certain sparkle in his eye looking on all the lovely machinery that had conveyed on the family property!
From grey cloud and light sprinkle, the sun began to bear down on us and the Club BBQ was in full swing. The kids organised themselves for a game of footy, the ladies running around all day (god love them) and the boys & girls walking thru the line up of wonderful cars and having the chance to catch a chat and take a photo with Bruce and his family.
At this stage before lunch, our President Rob M made a special presentation where we honored Bruce McPhee as member 327 of The GT Club to a great round of applause from all.
Bruce was presented with our club shirt and badge which he wore proudly and a big group shot was taken.
For me it was a day of many highs, meeting and chatting with individuals of the McPhee family, talking to our friends from The Australian Muscle Car Club, Newcastle GT Club, Hunter Valley GT club & Central Coast Ford club.
We loved the company, we loved the hospitality and most of all we loved the fact that our members showed up in force to be part of a historic day.
Special thanks to Ollie for as usual getting things done (Superwoman I call her), Johnny & the cooks on the BBQ and The McPhee's for having us. What an awesome privilege!
But lastly I really with to thank Nick M for the help in getting this off the ground and our President Rob M. There was a point in the morning that I was really concerned for Rob and wanting to know he was all okay on his way there. It saddened me to think that a bloke who put so much effort for us to have great day would miss out, but Rob came thru with the car and once again showing true leadership.
Thank you Rob, for getting this thing done mate, you truly are a champion.
Also Welcome Mr Bruce McPhee - PROUD MEMBER (327) OF THE GT CLUB!
Cheers,
Disco
